# Photo licence: how we choose and credit photos

Every photo on the site is one we are allowed to use. Most come from Wikimedia Commons under their authors' free licences, and each shows its author and licence.

This page says how we pick those photos, how we credit them, what we do when a licence asks for share-alike, and the terms for photos sailors send us. It also gives the licence for the graphics and data we make ourselves.

Published 7 Oct 2026. Written by [Domagoj Franc](https://olasail.com/about/people/domagoj-franc/), editor.

## How we choose photos

Most of our photos come from Wikimedia Commons, where each file lists its author and licence on its own page. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026) We also use photos their photographers gave us permission to publish, credited "Used with permission".

- Only licences that let us A licence that lets anyone share and adapt the photo, with credit: Creative Commons BY or BY-SA, in any version, or public domain. We skip photos marked "no derivatives", because we crop every photo to fit its place on the page, and photos marked "non-commercial".
- We read the file's own page We take the author and the licence from the photo's page on Commons, not from a copy elsewhere, and note both in our list of photos with the page's address.
- Where a photo was taken A place's own page shows only photos of that place, and a map where we have none. A guide or a route may show a typical scene from somewhere else, and its credit says where it is.
- Never an AI image We never use a picture of a real place made or changed with AI.
- Nothing changed We don't add, remove or retouch anything in someone else's photo. We make smaller copies for speed and show them cropped to fit.

- CC BY-SA 4.0, share-alike 32 photos
- CC BY 2.0 24 photos
- CC BY-SA 3.0, share-alike 19 photos
- CC BY 3.0 15 photos
- CC BY-SA 3.0 AT, share-alike 6 photos
- CC0 6 photos
- CC BY-SA 2.0, share-alike 4 photos
- CC BY-SA 3.0 DE, share-alike 4 photos
- CC BY 4.0 2 photos

## How we credit them

Most of these licences ask for three things: credit the author, name and link the licence, and say if you changed the photo. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026) We do it in two places:

- On the page A page's main photos carry a short credit: "Photo:", the author and the licence.
- In the slideshow Every photo opens in the slideshow, with its full credit under it: the place, what the photo shows, the author, the licence linked to its text, and a link to the photo's page on Commons, or to the photographer's page for a photo used with permission.

A credit, as it shows in the slideshow:

Kut, Vis town, island of Vis. Kut waterfront in Vis town with yachts and gulets moored and a yacht on a buoy in front. Photo: Falk2, [CC BY-SA 4.0](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0), [on Wikimedia Commons](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:J32_421_Vis-Stadt,_Lu%C4%8Dica.jpg)

We copy the author's name exactly as the file page gives it, even when it is a user name.

## When a licence asks for share-alike

CC BY-SA asks the same, and one thing more: if you remix, transform or build on the photo, you must share your version under the same licence. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026) 65 of the 116 photos we use today are share-alike.

- The photo keeps its licence On our pages a share-alike photo stays under its own licence, and its credit says so, "CC BY-SA", with the link.
- Our page keeps its own terms A photo on a page with our text doesn't change either one. The photo's licence covers the photo, not the page around it. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026)
- If we ever edit one If we must change a share-alike photo, for example to blur a face or a boat's name, we share our edited version under the same licence, and the credit says what we changed, for example "Photo: the author's name, CC BY-SA 4.0, face blurred by OlaSail".
- If a licence doesn't suit We don't use the photo. We look for another, or show a map.

## Every photo we use, and its credit

Today that is 116 photos by 65 photographers: 112 from Wikimedia Commons, each under its author's licence, and 4 used with the photographer's permission.

## Photos sailors send us

A dated photo of a price board, a notice or the buoys helps us check a fact. When you send one with [Report a change](https://olasail.com/about/corrections/):

- You keep the copyright The photo stays yours, and you can use it anywhere else.
- You let us publish it On OlaSail and in our reports, for free, for as long as the page is up. You tell us you took it yourself.
- We credit you as you ask By your first name and initial if you filled in "Credit me as", or "Photo: a sailor". A photo of an operator's own price board makes the fact [From the operator](https://olasail.com/about/how-we-check/#labels), with your credit on the photo.
- We edit it lightly We may crop it, correct the light, blur faces, boat names and registrations, and remove the location data.
- Others can't reuse it from us Unless you tell us they may, under a free licence you choose. Then we show that licence with your credit.
- You can take it back Ask us and we take it off the page within 7 days, and the credit becomes "a sailor".

What we keep with your photo, and for how long, is in our [privacy policy](https://olasail.com/privacy/#photos). The licence you give us for everything you send is in our [terms of use](https://olasail.com/terms/#licence).

- How to credit us"Graphic: OlaSail, CC BY 4.0", with our name linked to the graphic's page. Each graphic's page has the credit line and the embed code ready to copy.
- The credit is inside the image Every graphic shows our name, its source and the date we checked it, so a copy found elsewhere still says where it came from and how old it is.
- A published file never changes Each file has its year in its name. When a rule or a figure changes, we publish a new file and leave the old one where it is, so nothing changes under someone's article.
- Only checked facts A graphic shows only facts we have checked, each drawn from the same record as the page, with its source. Anything still to check is left out, and the graphic says so.
