Sea cave on Biševo, off Vis

# The Blue Cave in Croatia, by boat

The Blue Cave is a sea cave on the small island of Biševo, off Komiža on Vis. You can't take your own boat in or swim inside: visits use a licensed cave boat from Mezuporat. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026) Nautički centar Komiža d.o.o. holds the county's concession to organise visits to the Blue Cave (Official source, 26 Sep 2026), and it posts the queue and the sea conditions online.

## How to visit from your own boat

Modra špilja, the Blue Cave or Blue Grotto, is a sea cave in Balun cove on the east coast of Biševo. Sun comes in under the water and lights it blue.

1. 1

   ### Leave Komiža early

About 5 NM from Komiža to the Blue Cave, about 1 h at 6 knots. (Measured by us, 25 Sep 2026)
2. 2

   ### Check the queue and the sea

Nautički centar Komiža d.o.o. posts the queue and the sea conditions for visits online. (From the operator, 5 Oct 2026) Nautički centar Komiža d.o.o. holds the county's concession to organise visits to the Blue Cave. (Official source, 26 Sep 2026) [See the queue now](https://www.modraspilja.hr/)
3. 3

   ### Wait for your turn

You leave your boat in Mezuporat bay, which serves the Blue Cave visits, and go into the cave in the operator's boat: the ticket covers one transfer and the visit. The operator's information desk is on the shore. (Official source, 5 Oct 2026) Nautički centar Komiža d.o.o. holds the county concession for the mooring in Mezuporat bay, where you land for the Blue Cave. (Official source, 26 Sep 2026) [Where to wait](https://olasail.com/places/bisevo-blue-cave/#stay)
4. 4

   ### Go in on a licensed cave boat

You go in on a small boat through a passage about 1.5 m high and 2.4 to 2.5 m wide. (Third-party source, 26 Sep 2026)

The rule: Visits are only with the concession holder's boats, from Mezuporat, with a ticket. No boat of any kind may move, anchor or tie up in the Blue Cave or the Bear Cave, and you may not swim or dive in the Blue Cave

(From the operator, 26 Sep 2026)

## Where to wait, and where to sleep

There is no night at the cave itself, so plan it as a day stop between Komiža and your next night. Prices are for a 12 m boat in 2026.

If you are starting near Dubrovnik, check which cave your trip reaches: the Blue Cave on Koločep near Dubrovnik is a different cave from the Blue Cave on Biševo. (Third-party source, 29 Sep 2026)

### Balun cove, at the cave

Day visit, no overnight stay

The cove on Biševo's east coast where the cave opens. The cave boats come and go here.

Balun cove, outside the cave, is deep and open to easterly and southerly winds. Mezuporat has 18 buoys that cave visitors may use free for two hours. Our cautious answer: wait in Mezuporat, on a buoy or at the pier, and don't anchor in Balun cove. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet. (Third-party source, 26 Sep 2026)

### Mezuporat

The bay just north of the cave. You leave your boat in Mezuporat bay, which serves the Blue Cave visits, and go into the cave in the operator's boat: the ticket covers one transfer and the visit. The operator's information desk is on the shore. (Official source, 5 Oct 2026)

Mezuporat is open to the north, north-east and east: a tramontana or bura can raise a rough sea, and a jugo sends a surge in. It is protected from the south-west and west (Official source, 5 Oct 2026)

Some boats stay the night at Biševo in settled weather, on the Mezuporat buoys or at anchor in Porat. Our cautious answer: stay only with a settled forecast and no bura, jugo or westerly, and anchor near the pier side of Mezuporat bay, not in its west part. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet. (Third-party source, 26 Sep 2026)

### [Komiža, Vis](https://olasail.com/places/komiza/)

The nearest town quay, 5 NM (Measured by us, 25 Sep 2026) from the cave, with two buoy fields in the bay. Nautički centar Komiža d.o.o. runs state boat line 612 from Komiža to Mezuporat, Salbunara and Porat on Biševo, with a 2026 timetable. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026)

Komiža bay is open to the west and south-west, and these winds raise high waves in it (Third-party source, 27 Sep 2026). Berths inside the breakwater are sheltered (Third-party source, 27 Sep 2026). Its buoys lie close together, are open to westerlies, and take swell in any wind with south in it. A bura blows across them in shifting gusts but raises no waves. (Third-party source, 28 Sep 2026) Our cautious answer: if a westerly, south-westerly or thunderstorm is forecast, lie inside the breakwater or go round to Vis town. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet.

€60 a day on the town quay, 12 m boat (Official source, 26 Sep 2026)

## Tickets and times

- When it opens: Unknown. [Tell us when the Blue Cave opens](https://olasail.com/about/corrections/#fact=bluecave.opening)
- Best light: The blue light comes in the morning, when the sun from the east lights the sandy bottom through the underwater entrance. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026)
- Early or late?: Early, on a week's charter: it leaves time for the long crossing on to Hvar.
- Ticket: €24 an adult and €12 a child aged 6 to 12 from 20 Jun to 10 Sep, and €18 and €9 from 1 Apr to 19 Jun and 11 Sep to 31 Oct. Under 6 free. Cash, card or bank transfer; the ticket includes the visitor centre's exhibition. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026)
- Who sells it: Nautički centar Komiža d.o.o. runs the cave visits and publishes the price list. The list in force since 1 Jun 2025 has a high season from 20 Jun to 10 Sep, and lower prices from 1 Apr to 19 Jun and from 11 Sep to 31 Oct. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026)

## Sea and wind

Visits run only when the sea and weather allow. The boats have to pass a low entrance, so check before you leave Komiža. (Third-party source, 26 Sep 2026)

[Queue and sea conditions](https://www.modraspilja.hr/) [Our forecast at the cave](https://olasail.com/places/bisevo-blue-cave/#wx)

Which winds close it. Balun cove, where the cave is, is open to the north-east, east and south-east, so a bura or a jugo sends swell in. It is sheltered from the maestral, and visits run only when the sea allows. Our cautious answer: in a bura, a jugo or any strong easterly, expect the visits to stop, and don't take your own boat round to Balun. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet. (Third-party source, 26 Sep 2026) Our [guide to the winds](https://olasail.com/croatia/weather-and-winds/) explains the jugo and the bura.

Plan B. If the sea is rough at Biševo, don't go. Stay another night in [Komiža](https://olasail.com/places/komiza/), as our [day 4 plan](https://olasail.com/routes/split-seven-days/#day-4) says.

How to read this forecast

Each part of the day shows its strongest hourly wind and gust, and its highest wave, in Croatian time. The words follow the Beaufort scale, and the model can't tell a real bura from any other northeast wind. ## Swim stops on Biševo by boat

Biševo is small, with a few houses and bays on every side. Nautički centar Komiža d.o.o. runs state boat line 612 from Komiža to Mezuporat, Salbunara and Porat on Biševo, with a 2026 timetable. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026) No anchoring within 150 m of a natural beach, under the 2025 ordinance. (Official source, 25 Sep 2026)

### Porat

A sandy bay on the west coast, 6 NM from Komiža (Measured by us, 7 Oct 2026)

By the hamlet of Porat, across the island from the cave.

- How to stop: The county's 2024 plan puts one buoy field the length of Porat bay, for up to 22 boats, with the beach fenced off for swimmers. Small boats anchor in the inner part, in 5 to 10 m. (Official source, 5 Oct 2026)
- Rules it out: Leave at once in westerly and south-westerly winds. The bay is no shelter from the jugo either, because it often veers south-west. (Official source, 26 Sep 2026)

### Salbunara

A small bay at the north end of the island

By the hamlet of Salbunara, at the island's north end.
