Islets, a lagoon and a sea cave off Vis

# Budikovac and the Green Cave by boat

Budikovac is a pair of islets off the south-east coast of Vis, with a shallow lagoon between them called the Blue Lagoon (Plava laguna). A day on one of Gradina Vis d.o.o.'s (Official source, 26 Sep 2026) buoys costs €60 (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026), and the Green Cave on Ravnik, 1.7 NM (Measured by us, 7 Oct 2026) south-west, lets you row your own dinghy in for a €15 (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026) ticket in summer.

€60 a day on a buoy, 2026 (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026)

€15 Green Cave ticket, adult in summer (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026)

7 NM from Vis town, about 1 h (Measured by us, 7 Oct 2026)

10 min inside on one ticket (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026)

## How to stop at Budikovac

Veli Budikovac and Mali Budikovac lie 1.3 NM east of Rukavac (Measured by us, 7 Oct 2026). OpenStreetMap names the lagoon between them Plava laguna, the Blue Lagoon. It is not the Blue Lagoon near Trogir: see [the Blue Lagoon on Drvenik Veli](https://olasail.com/places/drvenik-blue-lagoon/).

1. 1

   ### Come in from the south

Come into the lagoon only from the south, between Mali Budikovac and Veli Budikovac, and keep closer to Mali Budikovac: shallow rocks run out from Veli Budikovac. (Official source, 26 Sep 2026)

The shallow passage on the north side, between Veli Budikovac, the rock Sanak and Mali Budikovac, is not navigable. Two special marks with topmarks show it. (Official source, 26 Sep 2026)
2. 2

   ### Take the buoy you're given

A field of numbered buoys off the Budikovac islets, run by Gradina Vis d.o.o. under a concession, for boats up to 12 m. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026)

The concession holder's staff tell you which buoy to take, and you follow their instructions. You get an invoice for the fee, and you may ask to see the price list. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026) [Picking up a mooring buoy](https://olasail.com/moorings/med-mooring/#buoy)
3. 3

   ### Pay when you arrive

€60 a day on a buoy in 2026, VAT included, paid in cash when you arrive. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026)

You may not empty a black tank at the anchorage. The fee includes taking your dry rubbish off the boat. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026)
4. 4

   ### Swim outside the buoy field

On the buoys at Rukavac, Budikovac and Ravnik: no music from the boat, no swimming or diving inside the field, no anchoring between the buoys, and 5 knots at most. In bad weather someone must stay on board. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026)

So ask the staff where you may swim, or take the dinghy to the beach on Veli Budikovac. A small restaurant stands by the beach on Budikovac. (Third-party source, 26 Sep 2026)

Shallow, with protected seagrass. In the passage between the islets the bottom is stony gravel over fine sand, down to about 4 m. Protected seagrass, Cymodocea nodosa, grows there at 1 to 2 m. (Official source, 26 Sep 2026)

The lagoon is inside the Natura 2000 site for the south-east coast of Vis (HR3000096). Posidonia meadows grow at 4 to 16 m outside the passage, and the study asks sailors not to anchor on the seagrass. (Official source, 26 Sep 2026)

Between the coast of Vis and the chain of islets from Ravnik through Budikovac to Greben, many shoals and reefs make the passage difficult. The Pokrivena shoal, between Veli Budikovac and Paržan Veli, has a pole with a north cardinal topmark. (Official source, 26 Sep 2026)

Position: 43°01.56′N 016°14.36′E Approximate: the middle of the lagoon, read off OpenStreetMap. Not a waypoint. (Measured by us, 29 Sep 2026)

## The Green Cave on Ravnik, by your own dinghy

The Green Cave is a sea cave on Ravnik with two large openings. Sunlight comes in through a hole in its high roof and lights the seabed like a spotlight. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026) In Croatian it is Zelena špilja. Gradina Vis d.o.o. holds the concession for the cave: it runs and looks after the visits. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026)

- Going in: You may go in on your own small boat without using the engine, and swim inside. You may stay 10 minutes. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026) So cut the outboard at the entrance and row in, or swim.
- Open: Open 9 am to 5 pm, every day that the weather allows. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026)
- Tickets: €15 an adult and €7 a child of 6 to 12 from 15 Jun to 15 Sep 2026, and €10 and €5 out of season. A ticket lets you stay and swim for up to 10 minutes. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026) Tickets are sold in front of the entrance. To avoid a longer wait there, ask Gradina Vis d.o.o. by email for an invoice, pay ahead, and collect the tickets at the cave. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026) [All the fees](https://olasail.com/places/budikovac-green-cave/#fees)
- Where to leave the boat: Gradina Vis d.o.o. also has buoys off Ravnik, at €40 a day in 2026, paid in cash. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026) The Ravnik buoy field is on the north side of the islet, away from the cave. (Official source, 26 Sep 2026) You can anchor north-west of Ravnik in about 20 m, where the holding is good. (Official source, 26 Sep 2026) The Rukavac buoys are 0.8 NM away (Measured by us, 7 Oct 2026), and Budikovac 1.7 NM (Measured by us, 7 Oct 2026).
- Inside: Like other caves on the south sides of the outer islands, it was cut by the waves of the open sea. Inside, the water is 3 to 5 m deep. (Official source, 26 Sep 2026)
- Protected: The cave has been protected as a natural monument since 1967, and Ravnik is protected as a significant landscape. (Official source, 26 Sep 2026)
- Where it is: 43°00.92′N 016°13.46′E, on the south-west shore of Ravnik. Approximate: the cave entrance on OpenStreetMap. Not a waypoint. (Measured by us, 29 Sep 2026)

## Buoys nearby, and where to sleep

The county's concession map names Gradina Vis d.o.o. as the holder of the anchorage concession at Budikovac, Rukavac and Ravnik. (Official source, 26 Sep 2026) Its fees are for a day on a buoy. [Vis town harbour](https://olasail.com/moorings/vis-town-harbour/) is the nearest town quay.

Rukavac is sheltered from every wind except south to south-easterlies. Our cautious answer: leave Rukavac if a jugo is forecast, and mind the shallows in the west part. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet. (Third-party source, 26 Sep 2026)

### [Vis town](https://olasail.com/moorings/vis-town-harbour/)

The island's main harbour and town quay, 7 NM round the east end of Vis (Measured by us, 7 Oct 2026).

Vis harbour is open to the bura and the jugo, and every wind blows hard here, the bura and the jugo most of all. Our cautious answer: in a bura or a jugo expect a rough night on the town quay, and strong gusts in any other wind. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet. The Kut side is open to northerly and north-westerly winds. (Third-party source, 26 Sep 2026) Our cautious answer: in a strong maestral expect Kut to be the more exposed side. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet. (Third-party source, 28 Sep 2026)

## When the tour boats come

- Day tours: One Split tour agency's published day plan: the Blue Cave at 9:45 am, Stiniva at 11 am, the Green Cave at 11:40 am, Budikovac at 12:30 pm, then the Pakleni Islands and Hvar from 1:30 pm. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026)
- At the cave: Tickets are sold in front of the entrance. To avoid a longer wait there, ask Gradina Vis d.o.o. by email for an invoice, pay ahead, and collect the tickets at the cave. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026)
- So: Come in the morning, before the day tours arrive. On our week from Split you leave Vis town on day 3, so both stops fit before lunch.

## Which wind rules it out

Budikovac is open to southerly, south-easterly and south-westerly winds, which bring bigger waves, and a storm jugo sends a surge in; the 2024 plan expects a rougher sea in a bura. The 2019 study calls it sheltered from the maestral. (Official source, 5 Oct 2026)

Tidal currents run at up to 0.6 knots, and a storm jugo can push them to 2 knots. (Official source, 26 Sep 2026)

Like other caves on the south sides of the outer islands, it was cut by the waves of the open sea. Inside, the water is 3 to 5 m deep. (Official source, 26 Sep 2026) Its entrance is on the south-west shore of Ravnik, facing the open sea. (Measured by us, 29 Sep 2026)

If a storm threatens, boats must double their lines, and leave or move into the lee if the staff tell them to. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026) Our [guide to the winds](https://olasail.com/croatia/weather-and-winds/) explains the jugo and the maestral.

Plan B. In a jugo, or with a swell from the south, skip the lagoon and the cave that day. Our [day 3 plan](https://olasail.com/routes/split-seven-days/#day-3) has the other choices.

## Wind and sea, next 3 days

Along day 3 of our week, Vis town to Komiža round the south coast, past Budikovac and Ravnik.

How to read this forecast

Each part of the day shows its strongest hourly wind and gust, and its highest wave, in Croatian time. The words follow the Beaufort scale, and the model can't tell a real bura from any other northeast wind.
