Island in Central Dalmatia

# Vis island by boat

Vis is an island across an open channel from Split and Hvar, with two harbour towns, Vis and Komiža, and buoy fields at Stončica, Rukavac and Budikovac. Plan two nights or more, because the crossing each way takes about half a day.

30 NM from Split, about 5 h (Measured by us, 24 Sep 2026)

15 NM from Hvar town, about 2½ h (Measured by us, 24 Sep 2026)

June, Sep the best months

## Where to spend the night on Vis

8 places to stay the night. Prices are for a 12 m boat in 2026. Shelter lines name the local winds: the jugo blows from the southeast and the bura from the northeast. [What each wind does. Our cautious answer: weather descriptions, not a forecast: read DHMZ's forecast for sailors before you go. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet.](https://olasail.com/places/vis/#wind)

### [Vis town harbour](https://olasail.com/moorings/vis-town-harbour/)

The island's main harbour, with a town quay, the public waterfront berth. About 60 yachts on the main quay and 40 in Kut, on lazy lines, with water and power posts. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026)

Vis harbour is open to the bura and the jugo, and every wind blows hard here, the bura and the jugo most of all. (Third-party source, 28 Sep 2026) Our cautious answer: in a bura or a jugo expect a rough night on the town quay, and strong gusts in any other wind. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet. The Kut side is open to northerly and north-westerly winds. (Third-party source, 26 Sep 2026) Our cautious answer: in a strong maestral expect Kut to be the more exposed side. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet.

€119.15 a day on the quay in 2026, 12 m boat (Measured by us, 26 Sep 2026)

About €119.15 a day for a 12 m monohull on the town quay in 2026: the county's port fee of €60 and Gradina Vis's port charge of €59.15. (Official source, 26 Sep 2026) (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026)

### [Komiža](https://olasail.com/places/komiza/)

The town quay on the west coast, 5 NM from the Blue Cave. The harbour fills early in summer.

Komiža bay is open to the west and south-west, and these winds raise high waves in it (Third-party source, 27 Sep 2026). Berths inside the breakwater are sheltered (Third-party source, 27 Sep 2026). Its buoys lie close together, are open to westerlies, and take swell in any wind with south in it. A bura blows across them in shifting gusts but raises no waves. (Third-party source, 28 Sep 2026) Our cautious answer: if a westerly, south-westerly or thunderstorm is forecast, lie inside the breakwater or go round to Vis town. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet.

### [Komiža buoys](https://olasail.com/places/komiza/#lucica)

Two buoy fields in the bay, under a county concession held by Nautički centar Komiža d.o.o.: Lučica, for 19 boats up to 12 m, and Pol Guspu, for 17 boats up to 16 m. (Official source, 26 Sep 2026)

Komiža bay, where the Lučica buoys lie, is open to the west and south-west, and these winds raise high waves in it. The buoys take swell, and are exposed to any wind with south in it. Our cautious answer: treat Lučica as open from the west round to the south. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet. (Third-party source, 27 Sep 2026)

### Rukavac

Two fields of numbered buoys in the bay, run by Gradina Vis d.o.o. under a concession, for boats up to 12 m. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026) Rukavac has three inns, and their owners lay a few buoys for visiting boats. (Third-party source, 26 Sep 2026)

Rukavac is sheltered from every wind except south to south-easterlies. Our cautious answer: leave Rukavac if a jugo is forecast, and mind the shallows in the west part. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet. (Third-party source, 26 Sep 2026)

€60 a day on a buoy, 2026 (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026)

On the buoys at Rukavac, Budikovac and Ravnik: no music from the boat, no swimming or diving inside the field, no anchoring between the buoys, and 5 knots at most. In bad weather someone must stay on board. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026)

### [Budikovac](https://olasail.com/places/budikovac-green-cave/)

A field of numbered buoys off the Budikovac islets, run by Gradina Vis d.o.o. under a concession, for boats up to 12 m. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026) A small restaurant stands by the beach on Budikovac. (Third-party source, 26 Sep 2026)

Budikovac is open to southerly, south-easterly and south-westerly winds, which bring bigger waves, and a storm jugo sends a surge in; the 2024 plan expects a rougher sea in a bura. The 2019 study calls it sheltered from the maestral (Official source, 5 Oct 2026)

### Srebrna

A pebble bay west of Rukavac, for a swim or a quiet night in settled weather. A natural pebble beach and wide rock slabs that slope gently into the sea. (Official source, 30 Sep 2026)

Well sheltered from every wind, but a strong jugo sends a swell in (Official source, 30 Sep 2026)

No concession on the county map, 2026 (Official source, 26 Sep 2026)

### Oključna

A small bay on the north coast, west of Vis town.

Oključna lies on the bura side of Vis. Our cautious answer: don't stay in Oključna if any bura or northerly is forecast. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet. (Third-party source, 26 Sep 2026)

## Wind and sea, next 3 days

For Vis town harbour.

Model forecast from Open-Meteo. Not an official forecast. Not for navigation.

Official forecast: [DHMZ marine forecast](https://meteo.hr/prognoze_e.php?section=prognoze_specp&param=jadran) (Official source, 25 Sep 2026)

How to read this forecast

Each part of the day shows its strongest hourly wind and gust, and its highest wave, in Croatian time. The words follow the Beaufort scale, and the model can't tell a real bura from any other northeast wind. ## Swim stops on Vis by boat

Day stops for a swim or lunch, most of them on the south coast near Rukavac. Our [swim and lunch stops on a week from Split](https://olasail.com/routes/split-seven-days/swim-stops/) fits them into the route. No anchoring within 150 m of a natural beach, under the 2025 ordinance. (Official source, 25 Sep 2026) [Anchoring near beaches](https://olasail.com/moorings/anchoring-rules-and-fees/#beaches)

### [Stiniva cove](https://olasail.com/places/stiniva/)

A pebble beach behind a narrow gap in the cliffs, 2.5 NM from Rukavac (Measured by us, 7 Oct 2026)

- How to stop: In summer a line of floats is laid across the cove. It protects the swimmers and keeps small boats out of the cove. (Official source, 26 Sep 2026) Stop outside the mouth and swim in.
- Fee: No concession for the proposed buoy field had been granted by 26 Sep 2026: the county's concession map shows no concession of any kind within 4.7 km of the cove. (Official source, 26 Sep 2026) [Who may charge you](https://olasail.com/moorings/anchoring-rules-and-fees/#fees)
- Busy: In summer many small boats and yachts anchor or tie up right at the mouth of the cove. (Official source, 26 Sep 2026)
- Rules it out: Anchoring in the cove isn't recommended. It is deep, and southerly winds send a strong surge into it. The cliffs block some of the bura, but it comes in strong gusts that can drag an anchor. (Official source, 26 Sep 2026)

### [Budikovac and its lagoon](https://olasail.com/places/budikovac-green-cave/)

Shallow turquoise water between two islets, 1.3 NM from Rukavac (Measured by us, 7 Oct 2026)

- How to stop: Come into the lagoon only from the south, between Mali Budikovac and Veli Budikovac, and keep closer to Mali Budikovac: shallow rocks run out from Veli Budikovac. (Official source, 26 Sep 2026) The buoy field lies inside the lagoon, on shallow ground to 5 m, for boats up to 12 m. Gradina Vis's rules forbid swimming and diving in the buoy field, and anchoring anywhere it hasn't marked. Enter from the south, closer to Mali Budikovac: the shallow passage past Sanak isn't navigable. (From the operator, 5 Oct 2026)
- Fee: €60 a day on a buoy in 2026, VAT included, paid in cash when you arrive. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026) Keep out of the buoy field to swim. [The buoys](https://olasail.com/places/vis/#budikovac)
- Busy: Vis Rent’s round-the-island tours leave Vis town at 09:00 and 14:00 and include Budikovac Lagoon. The operator gives no arrival time there. (From the operator, 4 Oct 2026)
- Rules it out: Budikovac is open to southerly, south-easterly and south-westerly winds, which bring bigger waves, and a storm jugo sends a surge in; the 2024 plan expects a rougher sea in a bura. The 2019 study calls it sheltered from the maestral. (Official source, 5 Oct 2026)

### [The Green Cave, Ravnik](https://olasail.com/places/budikovac-green-cave/#green-cave)

A sea cave on the islet south of Rukavac, 0.8 NM away (Measured by us, 7 Oct 2026)

- How to stop: Gradina Vis d.o.o. also has buoys off Ravnik, at €40 a day in 2026, paid in cash. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026)
- Tickets: €15 an adult and €7 a child of 6 to 12 from 15 Jun to 15 Sep 2026, and €10 and €5 out of season. A ticket lets you stay and swim for up to 10 minutes. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026)
- Queue: HvarBoats’ tour from Hvar stops at the Green Cave on Ravnik from 11:00 to 11:30. (From the operator, 4 Oct 2026)
- Rules it out: The Green Cave is on Ravnik's south side, which takes the wind and waves from the south, the county's plan says; by our measure from the chart it also has long open water to the east and west. Boat visits run only when the weather allows. (Official source, 5 Oct 2026)

[The Blue Cave, Biševo A sea cave on Biševo, 5 NM from Komiža (Measured by us, 25 Sep 2026) How to stop You leave your boat in Mezuporat bay, which serves the Blue Cave visits, and go into the cave in the operator's boat: the ticket covers one transfer and the visit. The operator's information desk is on the shore. (Official source, 5 Oct 2026) Tickets €24 an adult and €12 a child aged 6 to 12 from 20 Jun to 10 Sep, and €18 and €9 from 1 Apr to 19 Jun and 11 Sep to 31 Oct. Under 6 free. Cash, card or bank transfer; the ticket includes the visitor centre's exhibition. (From the operator, 26 Sep 2026) Opens Unknown. Rules it out Visits run only when the sea and weather allow.
