Shelter by wind in Milna bay

NNEESESSWWNW

Milna lies at the end of a long, narrow bay cut deep into the west coast of Brač, facing the Split Gate. The marina is at the far end, in the south-east arm. What ACI and our visits say, wind by wind, is below.

OpenShelteredWedges show where the wind blows from
All windsthe operator's words
Sheltered. Milna is the largest and best-protected bay on the west coast of Brač, sheltered from all winds, ACI says. (From the operator, )
Burafrom the northeast
The inner bay at Milna, where ACI's marina lies, is sheltered from most winds, but a strong bura reaches it, and southerly and south-westerly winds blow hard there without raising big waves. Our cautious answer: expect gusts on the pontoons in a strong bura and double your lines, and never anchor in the harbour entrance. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet. (Third-party source, )
Maestralfrom the northwest
Milna's outer bay is open to northerly and north-westerly winds, and southerly and south-westerly winds blow hard across it but raise no big waves  (Third-party source, ), while the inner bay is sheltered.  (Third-party source, ) Our cautious answer: in a strong maestral expect chop at the mouth, and keep to the inner bay. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet.

The approach. Mrduja islet, 2.5 NM west of Milna in the Split Gate, is the landmark. Its green light, Fl G 3s, at 43°20.3′N 16°24.9′E, can be passed on either side. (From the operator, )

From Mrduja, pass Cape Bijaka and its red light, Fl R 3s. The church bell tower at the head of the bay points to the marina, with a red light on the town pier to port, Fl(2) R 5s. (From the operator, )

More than 20,000 passages a year go through the Split Gate, over 10,000 each way, two to three times more in summer, and about 30% of them fast craft. On 14 Jun 2026 a passenger ship and a sailing yacht collided there. Keep a lookout astern (Official source, ) Crossing the Split Gate: fast ferries

Milna, Brač

The marina in Milna was very full even in late May 2025, early in the season, and the crew were glad they had booked ahead. It started pouring just as they came in to berth.

Milna, Brač

In late August 2025 a breeze in the upper teens was blowing across the quay of ACI Marina Milna as they came in, and the yacht ahead of them was swept onto moored boats until a marinero towed it into place with a dinghy. They berthed next, with the crew ready on the fenders.

Coming into Milna in late August 2025 they found six boats queuing for the fuel dock behind a catamaran and gave up. When they came back first thing the next morning, five boats were already waiting.
