Komiža by boat

Komiža is the harbour town on the west coast of Vis. Stay on the town quay inside the breakwater, on a buoy in one of two fields, or at anchor; the bay is open to the west, so go round to Vis town if a westerly is forecast.

Tonight in Komiža

Can we stay here tonight? Yes: on the town quay, on a buoy in the bay, or at anchor. The quay and the buoys fill by late afternoon in July and August.

On the quay
Komiža is a class I.B county port: €5 a metre a day for a boat of 10.01 to 15 m, so €60 for a 12 m boat, all year. (Official source, )In the Split-Dalmatia county ports, catamarans pay twice the rate per metre. (Official source, )You pay the port authority's attendant in the port, in cash or by card, and get an invoice. (Official source, )
On a buoy
Two buoy fields in the bay, under a county concession held by Nautički centar Komiža d.o.o.: Lučica, for 19 boats up to 12 m, and Pol Guspu, for 17 boats up to 16 m. (Official source, )The 2026 buoy price: unknown. Tell us about the buoy price in 2026 at KomižaIn 2023 a buoy cost €45 a night for a boat of 10 to 12.49 m, paid in cash. VAT, rubbish collection and the showers in the harbour's public toilets were included; water and power were extra, at the port authority's rates. (From the operator, )
At anchor
In a public port's anchorage you pay the berth fee less 30% on a buoy, or less 50% at anchor. (Official source, )No anchoring within 150 m of a natural beach, under the 2025 ordinance. (Official source, ) Where boats anchorAnchoring rules and fees

(From the operator, )Metered water costs €5 a cubic metre and power €0.68 a kWh. Without a meter, a boat up to 20 m pays a flat €1.20 a metre for water and €1.20 a metre for power, before VAT. (Official source, )
Fuel
The port authority lists a fuel pump for boats in Vis town, with power, water and repairs, and none in Komiža. For serious repairs, it says, go to Vis. (Official source, )
Ashore
The port authority lists 390 m of quay in Komiža, and shops, a market, a fish market, a clinic and a pharmacy in town. A bus runs to Vis town and its ferry, and small boats to Biševo. Its staff answer on +385 91 271 3000 and +385 91 271 3002. (Official source, )
Wind
Take care on the harbour in a westerly storm. Westerlies and south-westerlies raise high waves in Komiža bay  (Third-party source, ), and its buoys take swell in any southerly.  (Third-party source, ) Our cautious answer: if a westerly, a south-westerly or a thunderstorm is forecast, decide by lunchtime and go round to Vis town. Shelter by wind in Komiža

NNEESESSWWNW

The bay faces west, towards Biševo and the open sea. The island shelters it from the bura and the jugo, but a westerly or a summer storm from the west sends a swell straight in.

OpenSome swellShelteredWedges show where the wind blows from
Westerly, summer stormsfrom the west and southwest
Komiža bay is open to the west and south-west, and these winds raise high waves in it  (Third-party source, ). Berths inside the breakwater are sheltered  (Third-party source, ). Its buoys lie close together, are open to westerlies, and take swell in any wind with south in it. A bura blows across them in shifting gusts but raises no waves.  (Third-party source, ) Our cautious answer: if a westerly, south-westerly or thunderstorm is forecast, lie inside the breakwater or go round to Vis town. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet.
Maestralfrom the northwest
Some swell on the outer buoys. The afternoon breeze blows along the coast, so Pol Guspu rolls a little and the quay stays calm.
Bura and jugofrom the northeast and southeast
Sheltered. Both blow over the island, so expect gusts down the hills rather than swell.

Vis town harbour

Vis harbour is open to the bura and the jugo, and every wind blows hard here, the bura and the jugo most of all.  (Third-party source, ) Our cautious answer: in a bura or a jugo expect a rough night on the town quay, and strong gusts in any other wind. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet. The Kut side is open to northerly and north-westerly winds.  (Third-party source, ) Our cautious answer: in a strong maestral expect Kut to be the more exposed side. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet. The island's main harbour, on the north coast, sheltered from the west.

What sailors told us

From sailors after a night here. They tell us what to check next, and don't count in the checks above.

At the end of September 2026 a crew reached Komiža bay in the late afternoon, picked up a mooring buoy and went ashore for a lobster dinner at Jastožera.

Komiža, Vis

Arriving early on a light-wind day in late August 2025, they picked up a buoy in Komiža easily, then watched other boats compete for the last ones. The buoys felt close together, and a catamaran swinging nearby worried them.

In late August 2025 it took some asking around in Komiža to find where to leave the dinghy, and they ended up at one end of a beach.
