Boarding day. Ask your charter company for its boarding time, and leave only when check-in leaves enough daylight for the leg to Palmižana.

In Split, the morning is yours: charter companies hand over their boats from 3 pm to 7 pm  (From the operator, ). At Pazar, the green market by Diocletian's Palace, open in the mornings, buy fresh food for the first two days. (From the operator, ) Cast off for Palmižana only if check-in leaves enough daylight for the crossing. Off the Pakleni Islands, call ACI Marina Palmižana on VHF 17 at least 30 minutes before you come in, and ask where to berth. (From the operator, )

Stops on the way

A stop you could add: Proizd islet
  • Proizd islet, Vela Luka, an under 1 NM detour, about ½ h more

An islet at the mouth of Vela Luka bay, off the west end of Korčula, with pebble beaches and paths through pine woods.

Proizd lies in the Natura 2000 site for the islet and Privala cape (HR3000152). Its 2023 management plan records anchoring on the seagrass meadows all through the season, and its rules forbid dropping an anchor on seagrass  (Official source, ). No anchoring within 150 m  (Official source, ) of a natural beach.

    How to stop here

Anchor. Shelter: Our measure from the chart: the bay on Proizd's south side is open to the south, south-west and west, with more than 10 NM of open water, and partly to the east and south-east  (Measured by us, ).

Follow Korčula's coast from Vela Luka to Korčula town.

A day ahead, book ACI Marina Korčula: ACI wants a daily berth booked at least 24 hours ahead, unless the marina agrees to less, and it is yours once ACI confirms it in writing. (From the operator, ) In Korčula, charter fleets use the marina, and from Sunday to Wednesday it often has no room for visiting yachts. (Third-party source, ) Coming into Korčula town, the cathedral's bell tower is the landmark; call the marina at least 30 minutes before you come in. Our cautious answer: check the depth and set the anchor yourself before you leave the boat. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet. In Istruga, anchor in the middle of the cove in about 4 m, on mud that holds well  (Third-party source, )

    How to stop here

Take a buoy or anchor (Third-party source, ). Shelter: Our cautious answer: if a bura or a strong northerly or north-westerly is forecast, anchor well inside Istruga or go elsewhere. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet. Only Istruga, the north arm of Brna bay, is sheltered from every wind. The bay is open to the bura, and strong northerly and north-westerly winds raise a strong chop in the harbour  (Third-party source, )

A wooded islet with a Franciscan monastery, just east of Korčula town, with an anchorage in the channel behind it.

The Lučnjak shoal lies off Badija's north coast, marked by a pole, and the passage between Badija and Planjak is shallow and unfit for navigation. The Ježevica channel, between Badija and Korčula, is 4 to 6 m deep at its north entrance, where the Križ shoal (4.9 m) lies on the way in from the north, and at least 5.4 m deep at its south entrance, between Vrnik and Korčula. Inside the channel lie the low rock Baretica, the Plovita shoal, marked by a west cardinal pole, and the Soline shoal (3 m) north-east of Cape Soline  (Official source, ). The channel behind Badija lies in the Natura 2000 site HR4000007. Its 2023 management plan records the seagrass meadows towards the channel almost entirely dug up by anchoring, and its rules forbid dropping an anchor on seagrass  (Official source, ).

    How to stop here

Anchor (Official source, ). Shelter: The Badija side of the Ježevica channel is sheltered from winds from the west round to the north-west, but open to the south-west, south, south-east and east, where a jugo can raise a rough to very rough sea. A strong bura makes a rough sea at the channel's north entrance  (Official source, ).

Booking: Book the table and the berth with the restaurant, early in July and August. How it works
    • Zaklopatica park buoys: €76 a night: €40 a night on a park buoy, 12 m boat, plus €36 for the park ticket for a boat (Official source, )

Stops on the way

A stop you could add: Saplun bay
  • Saplun bay, Lastovnjaci, an under 1 NM detour, about ½ h more

A bay on the north side of the islet Mladine, in the Lastovnjaci group east of Lastovo, with the nature park's buoys.

In the nature park a boat may moor or anchor only at the marked moorings and anchorages. Anchoring anywhere else is forbidden  (Official source, ).

    How to stop here

Take a buoy (Official source, ). Shelter: Our measure from the chart: Saplun is open to the north-east, west and north-west, with more than 10 NM of open water, and partly to the north. The park asks boats to leave its buoys when winds over 20 m/s are forecast  (Measured by us, ).

Day 7, Friday: Polače to Šipanska Luka, 23 NM

Sail from Mljet to Šipanska Luka on Šipan.

In Polače, spend the morning at the lakes, a walk from the village: the boat's ticket doesn't cover them, so each person needs a visitor ticket too. (Official source, ) In the lakes, you may swim except where signs forbid it, but not dive. (Official source, ) By noon, leave the park: the boat's park ticket lasts until then. Shelter:
Šipanska Luka is the most sheltered anchorage in the Koločep channel, protected from every wind and wave, but a north-westerly can raise a rough sea in the bay, and a bura brings sudden shifts and gusts that can be dangerous at anchor  (Official source, )
Booking: First come: pay the attendant when you arrive, and come early in summer. How it works

If the plan changes

If the forecast does not suit the leg, stay another night in Polače.

      Shelter:
Our cautious answer: berth or anchor in the inner bay, and treat the outer bay among the islets as open. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet. The inner part of Polače bay is sheltered from every wind and sea, the online pilot says. The park calls it the largest and safest bay in the area  (Third-party source, )

Stops on the way

2 stops you could add: Okuklje bay and Prožurska Luka

Okuklje bay, Mljet, a 2 NM detour, about ½ h more

A bay on the north coast of Mljet, with a small village and its quay.

Our cautious answer: keep out of the south-west corner, and check that the anchor holds. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet. You may anchor in the bay, but the pebble bottom holds poorly. The south-west part of the bay is shallow, with a rock marked by an iron pole  (Third-party source, )

    How to stop here

Anchor (Third-party source, ). Shelter: Our cautious answer: in a strong south-easterly or south-westerly, check the anchor often. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet. Okuklje is sheltered from every wind, the online pilot says, and it calls Okuklje the most sheltered bay on Mljet; the park calls it very well protected. Very strong south-easterlies or south-westerlies set up swirling gusts (eddies) in the bay, so watch the anchor  (Third-party source, )

A bay on the north coast of Mljet, behind the islet Planjak, with the port authority's buoys.

Imray's 2024 supplement says buoys now fill the bay, leaving no room to anchor  (Third-party source, ).

    How to stop here

Take a buoy (Official source, ). Shelter: Our cautious answer: if a bura or a north-westerly is forecast, expect waves in the bay and check your mooring. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet. Prožurska Luka is sheltered from every wind, the online pilot says, but the bura and north-westerlies raise moderate waves in the bay  (Third-party source, )

    • Marina Martinis Marchi: €145 a night: €135 a day in July 2026, 12 m boat, plus €10 water and power (From the operator, )
      Shelter:
Our cautious answer: in a strong westerly or maestral expect movement on the outer berths, and don't take the shallow passages between the islets in a jugo. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet. Maslinica is sheltered from all winds, but north-westerlies and westerlies raise a chop  (Third-party source, )
Booking: Ask the marina ahead, through its website, by email or by phone. How it works
    • Šešula bay buoys: Free with dinner (From the operator, )
      Shelter:
Our cautious answer: choose the arm by the forecast, and check your anchor in a westerly or a thunderstorm. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet. Šešula is good shelter from every wind except westerlies, above all in a thunderstorm, but it depends on the arm  (Third-party source, ). Only the far south-east arm is sheltered from the jugo  (Third-party source, ). The north-east arm must be left when a northerly strengthens  (Third-party source, )
Booking: Book the table and the berth with the restaurant, early in July and August. How it works

What sailors told us

In short, sailors who sailed these waters tell us that one crew waited out a bura in Vis town harbour, Korčula’s marina can be packed with catamarans, a Lastovo bay was a pleasure before its buoys were laid, and Šipanska Luka’s lanes are worth a walk. Their words are below, quoted from sailing forums with the date each was posted. We haven’t checked them, and they don’t count in our checks above.

7Day 7, Šipanska Luka

That might have been my favorite anchorage during our trip a couple of years ago. We walked the narrow streets and paths up behind the waterfront and got a little lost among the homes and ruins.

4Day 4, ACI Marina Korčula

I am currently in Korcula town marina and there is about 40 feet of open space between the docks due to the length of the catamarans. We are basically trapped in port until the other boats closer to the harbor leave.

2Day 2, Vis town harbour

We had a burra on the 16-17th. The forecast wasn’t necessary “scary”, but we tucked ourselves at VIS harbor anyway.

Lastovo, in Skrivena Luka

Lastovo and "Skrivena Luka" was nice too (been there once; the mooring buoys were not installed at that time).
