How to visit from your own boat

Modra špilja, the Blue Cave or Blue Grotto, is a sea cave in Balun cove on the east coast of Biševo. Sun comes in under the water and lights it blue.

  1. 1

    Leave Komiža early

About 5 NM from Komiža to the Blue Cave, about 1 h at 6 knots. (Measured by us, )

  2. 2

Check the queue and the sea

Nautički centar Komiža d.o.o. posts the queue and the sea conditions for visits online. (From the operator, ) Nautički centar Komiža d.o.o. holds the county's concession to organise visits to the Blue Cave. (Official source, ) See the queue now

  3. 3

    Wait for your turn

You leave your boat in Mezuporat bay, which serves the Blue Cave visits, and go into the cave in the operator's boat: the ticket covers one transfer and the visit. The operator's information desk is on the shore. (Official source, ) Nautički centar Komiža d.o.o. holds the county concession for the mooring in Mezuporat bay, where you land for the Blue Cave. (Official source, ) Where to wait

  4. 4

Go in on a licensed cave boat

You go in on a small boat through a passage about 1.5 m high and 2.4 to 2.5 m wide. (Third-party source, )

The rule: Visits are only with the concession holder's boats, from Mezuporat, with a ticket. No boat of any kind may move, anchor or tie up in the Blue Cave or the Bear Cave, and you may not swim or dive in the Blue Cave

    (From the operator, )

Where to wait, and where to sleep

There is no night at the cave itself, so plan it as a day stop between Komiža and your next night. Prices are for a 12 m boat in 2026.

If you are starting near Dubrovnik, check which cave your trip reaches: the Blue Cave on Koločep near Dubrovnik is a different cave from the Blue Cave on Biševo. (Third-party source, )

Sea and wind

Visits run only when the sea and weather allow. The boats have to pass a low entrance, so check before you leave Komiža. (Third-party source, )

Queue and sea conditionsOur forecast at the cave

Which winds close it. Balun cove, where the cave is, is open to the north-east, east and south-east, so a bura or a jugo sends swell in. It is sheltered from the maestral, and visits run only when the sea allows. Our cautious answer: in a bura, a jugo or any strong easterly, expect the visits to stop, and don't take your own boat round to Balun. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet. (Third-party source, ) Our guide to the winds explains the jugo and the bura.

Plan B. If the sea is rough at Biševo, don't go. Stay another night in Komiža, as our day 4 plan says.

How to read this forecast

Each part of the day shows its strongest hourly wind and gust, and its highest wave, in Croatian time. The words follow the Beaufort scale, and the model can't tell a real bura from any other northeast wind. How to read a model forecast

Swim stops on Biševo by boat

Biševo is small, with a few houses and bays on every side. Nautički centar Komiža d.o.o. runs state boat line 612 from Komiža to Mezuporat, Salbunara and Porat on Biševo, with a 2026 timetable. (From the operator, ) No anchoring within 150 m of a natural beach, under the 2025 ordinance. (Official source, )

Porat

A sandy bay on the west coast, 6 NM from Komiža (Measured by us, )

By the hamlet of Porat, across the island from the cave.

How to stop
The county's 2024 plan puts one buoy field the length of Porat bay, for up to 22 boats, with the beach fenced off for swimmers. Small boats anchor in the inner part, in 5 to 10 m. (Official source, )
Rules it out
Leave at once in westerly and south-westerly winds. The bay is no shelter from the jugo either, because it often veers south-west. (Official source, )
