Brač island by boat

Brač is the big island across the channel from Split. Milna, on its sheltered west end, has two marinas and a town quay; Bol and the bays of the south coast face Hvar, and Pučišća sits in a deep bay on the north coast.

Swim stops on Brač by boat

Where to stop for a swim or lunch on the way, and what rules each one out. Zlatni Rat by boat: where to anchor, the rules and the boat line

The Zlatni Rat beach spit seen from the sea, with pine woods and Vidova Gora rising behind.Photo: “J32 692 Zlatni Rat, Vidova Gora” by Falk2, CC BY-SA 4.0, resized

Zlatni Rat

The pebble spit west of Bol, whose tip moves with the wind. 1 NM from the harbour (Measured by us, ).

How to stop
In season 20 to 30 boats a day anchor off the two sides of the spit: on the east side, in Potočine bay, in a maestral, and on the west side, in Paklina bay, in a jugo. (Official source, ) There is no buoy field: the study found only a few concrete blocks laid without a concession, and advised leaving Zlatni Rat out of the county's anchorages. (Official source, ) In season boats anchor on both sides of the spit: east in a maestral and west in a jugo. (Official source, )
The rules
No anchoring within 150 m of a natural beach, under the 2025 ordinance. (Official source, ) Within 300 m of the shore, in narrow channels and near harbours and anchorages, go no faster than 8 knots (Article 50). (Official source, )
Busy
A boat line runs from the centre of Bol to a pontoon at the start of the beach in Potočine bay, about every 15 minutes with up to 40 people, and half as often after 4 pm. (Official source, )
Rules it out
Open to the bura, and above all to southerly and south-westerly winds, which raise a rough sea. The spit juts into the narrowest part of the Hvar channel, so north-westerly, westerly and south-westerly winds blow harder round it. In a maestral boats anchor off the east side of the spit, and in a jugo off the west side. (Official source, )
The green Blaca valley descending between steep limestone slopes toward a glimpse of the Adriatic Sea

Blaca bay

A long bay under the cliffs, and the landing for the hermitage. 9.5 NM from Milna (Measured by us, ).

How to stop
A very good anchorage on sand. (Official source, ) The county's 2024 anchorage plan puts a buoy field along the east shore of Blaca bay, in up to 20 m. The bottom is sand and seagrass, shelving from the beach to 8 m, and the path to the hermitage starts at the old jetty on the east side. (Official source, )
Fee
Only a company with a concession for that anchorage, or the port authority inside a public port, may charge you for anchoring. Anywhere else, nobody may. (Official source, ) Who may charge you
Rules it out
Our cautious answer: Leave if any wind from the east round to the south-west is forecast. The county's texts disagree: the 2019 study calls Blaca safe from the north round to the east and open to the south and south-west; the 2024 plan calls it open to the south-east and south and sheltered from the south-west by Blacina glava. Either way the jugo and southerlies make the sea rough, and the maestral bouncing off the steep shores makes a chop. (Sources disagree, ) Treat Blaca, on Brač's south coast, as open to every wind from the east round to the south-west, and leave if any of them is forecast. It is sheltered from the bura, and a maestral bouncing off the steep shore makes a chop. (Sources disagree, )
Lučice bay seen from the rocks above it, turquoise water between pine-covered arms, a two-masted yacht at anchor at the mouth and small boats by the shore

Lučice

Coves near Milna for a lunch swim, 6.5 NM by sea from the marinas (Measured by us, ).

How to stop
The Milna Tourist Board lists buoy fields in Smrčeva, Lučice East and Osibova, but the county's records show those concessions ended between 2022 and 2024, so who runs the buoys in 2026 is unclear. (Third-party source, )
Fee
The buoys have their own price whether or not you eat: €100 a night for a boat of 14 to 44 ft, from 16:00 to 05:00, VAT included. Dinner guests keep the buoy until 10:00. Book dinner by 17:00. (From the operator, )
Rules it out
Our measure from the chart: the bay's mouth is open to the south-west and west, with more than 10 NM of open water, and partly to the south and south-east. (Measured by us, )

Open 9 am to 5 pm from 16 Jun to 15 Sep, and 9 am to 3 pm the rest of the year. Closed on Mondays. Adults pay €8. (From the operator, )

The museum reopened on 26 Sep 2026, after a wildfire damaged the paths. Repairs go on, so take care on the path up. (Third-party source, )

On the route

Brač is days 6 and 7 of Seven days from Split, a 123 NM loop. (Measured by us, ) Night 6 is in Milna, and day 7 takes you back to Split through the Split Gate. More than 20,000 passages a year go through the Split Gate, over 10,000 each way, two to three times more in summer, and about 30% of them fast craft. On 14 Jun 2026 a passenger ship and a sailing yacht collided there. Keep a lookout astern (Official source, )

What sailors told us

From sailors after a night here. They tell us what to check next, and don't count in the checks above.

Bobovišća, Brač

In late May 2025 they came into Bobovišća bay mid-afternoon, tied to a buoy and paddled the dinghy ashore for dinner. A group of 21 sailing together on three catamarans was in the bay the same night.

Bobovišća, Brač

A boat owner's favourite stop in Bobovišća is the quay at Konoba Vala, on the left inside the bay, with power and water two steps from the konoba, a small shop, and a swimming spot with a shower towards the entrance.
