Charter base in Central Dalmatia

Split for sailors

Split is the main charter base in Central Dalmatia. Most weeks start on a Saturday from ACI Marina Split in the city, or from Kaštela and the Trogir marinas near the airport; shop in the morning, board in the afternoon and keep the first leg short.

The first day out

Keep the first leg short. After a late check-in, a night 9 NM to 14 NM away leaves time to learn the boat. Most boats leave through the Split Gate, between Šolta and Brač. Our routes from here: Seven days from Split, Split to Dubrovnik in a week and two weeks through Korčula, Lastovo and Mljet. Med mooring, step by step

The Split Gate
More than 20,000 passages a year go through the Split Gate, over 10,000 each way, two to three times more in summer, and about 30% of them fast craft. On 14 Jun 2026 a passenger ship and a sailing yacht collided there. Keep a lookout astern (Official source, ) Split vessel traffic service works on VHF channels 12 and 62, and the Split harbour area on channel 9. Speed
Within 300 m of the shore, in narrow channels and near harbours and anchorages, go no faster than 8 knots (Article 50). (Official source, )
Harbourmaster
The harbourmaster's office is at Obala Lazareta 1, phone +385 21 302 405, weekdays 8 am to 1 pm. Its traffic and search and rescue line answers 24 hours: +385 21 362 436. (Official source, )

Each part of the day shows its strongest hourly wind and gust, and its highest wave, in Croatian time. The words follow the Beaufort scale, and the model can't tell a real bura from any other northeast wind. How to read a model forecast

Swim stops near Split

Three stops within an easy morning of the city, for the first or the last day of a week.

Kašjuni bay, under Marjan

The nearest swim stop to the city, on the south side of the Marjan peninsula. 2 NM from the city harbour (Measured by us, ).

How to stop
Anchor outside the swimming lines, and off a natural beach stay at least 150 m out: the 2025 ordinance bans anchoring closer. (Official source, )
The rules
No anchoring within 150 m of a natural beach, under the 2025 ordinance. (Official source, )
Rules it out
Our measure from the chart: Kašjuni is open to the south, with more than 10 NM of open water, and partly to the south-east, south-west and west. It shows open water only, not where the bay is sheltered. (Measured by us, )

Nečujam, on Šolta

Coves with buoys across the Split channel, a first-day lunch stop. 9 NM from Split (Measured by us, ).

How to stop
In 2018 the county decided to grant a 10-year concession for an anchorage for 48 boats in the Piškera and Maslinica coves. Its 2021 study lists no concession there, so it is not confirmed that buoys are laid. (Official source, )
Fee
Nečujam is a class III county port: €3 a metre a day for a boat of 10.01 to 15 m, so €36 for a 12 m boat on the quay. (Official source, )
Rules it out
Nečujam is well sheltered from every wind except the bura and other northerlies. Our cautious answer: leave Nečujam if a bura is forecast, and mind the submerged wall in Piškera cove. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet. (Third-party source, )
