Shelter by wind on Stari Grad town quay

NNEESESSWWNW

The town quay lies at the head of Stari Grad bay, the largest bay on Hvar. The county's anchorage study sends boats from the outer bay here in strong winds. Its wind notes describe coves in the bay, not the quay itself.

OpenSome swellShelteredWedges show where the wind blows from
Burafrom the northeast
In strong winds, boats further out in Stari Grad bay should seek shelter in Stari Grad itself. In Zavala, a cove on the Kabal shore 1.7 NM north-west of the town, the bura and jugo can blow hard but raise no high waves, though a north-westerly makes a rough sea; Tiha, further out, is a good anchorage in all winds of moderate strength. (Official source, )
Strong windsfrom any side
A shelter for the bay. In strong winds, boats in Luka Tiha, further out in Stari Grad bay, should seek shelter in Stari Grad. (Official source, )
Long waveswith a front from the west
Rarely, when a weather front passes from the west, the sea in Stari Grad bay can rise and fall in long waves about ten minutes apart and more than 1 m high, which can be dangerous for boats on moorings. (Official source, ) The study says this for Zavala, a cove on the Kabal shore of the same bay, 1.7 NM north-west of the town. Our advice: if a strong front from the west is forecast, leave slack in your lines and stay on board.

The approach. Stari Grad bay is the largest bay on Hvar, deep and wide. The ferry port and the town harbour are in its southeast. A light on the breakwater of the ferry port marks the way in. (Official source, )

How to read this forecast

Each part of the day shows its strongest hourly wind and gust, and its highest wave, in Croatian time. The words follow the Beaufort scale, and the model can't tell a real bura from any other northeast wind. How to read a model forecast

What sailors told us

From sailors after a night here. They tell us what to check next, and don't count in the checks above.

Stari Grad, Hvar

At the end of May 2025 the harbour in Stari Grad was closed to visiting boats while the town hosted the European open water swimming championships, which the crew only learned the day before. They took a buoy in Milna bay on the south side of Hvar instead and went over to Stari Grad by taxi.
