Shelter by wind in ACI Marina Vrboska

NNEESESSWWNW

The marina lies in the outer part of the harbour of Vrboska, at the end of a deep, narrow bay on the north coast of Hvar. What to watch here is the sea itself in a strong jugo, below.

OpenShelteredWedges show where the wind blows from
Every windfrom any side
Sheltered. Good shelter from every wind at the end of the long bay, ACI says. (From the operator, ) Vrboska is named as a safe shelter in a bura. Our cautious answer: expect gusts on the outer piers in any bura, and take an inner berth if you can. Our skipper reviewer hasn't checked this yet. (Third-party source, )
Strong jugofrom the southeast
The sea can rise fast. In a strong jugo the sea sometimes comes in very fast, up to 2 m above its usual level, most of all in the narrow part of the bay towards Vrboska. (Official source, ) Our advice: if a strong jugo is forecast, watch your lines and the gangway as the water rises and falls.

People in Vrboska always watch for the šćiga: the bay is shaped like a bottle, so when the sea rushes in, the level rises and then falls again. (Official source, )

The approach. From the north, the islet of Zečevo is a good mark: its light is Fl W 5s 11m 5M, at 43°11.5′N 16°42.1′E. By night, steer for the red light at the entrance to Jelsa (Fl R 3s 6m 5M). When the light on Cape Križ (Fl W 2s 5m 5M) comes in sight, so do the lights of Vrboska. (From the operator, )

What sailors told us

From sailors after a night here. They tell us what to check next, and don't count in the checks above.

ACI Marina Vrboska, Hvar

In late August 2025 they reached Vrboska on a westerly broad reach up the channel and berthed in the ACI marina without trouble. The village was small and uncrowded, with a sardine grill on the waterfront that night raising money for the local traditional boat club.
